SONGS from Robin Hood’s Bay

17 year-old Margaret Moorsom, who lived in Lancelot Cottage on Plane Tree Street in the old village, signed off her handwritten book of local songs on April 29th, 1877.

In the Spring of 2021, her book was finally published. It is a unique time capsule of songs from the days when Bay was full of sailors, shipowners and sea captains.

This is a book both for lovers of Bay’s very special history and those who love the traditional music and songs of our land.

Just some of the stories in song to be found in this book: The eponymous song “Robin Hood’s Bay” extolling its virtues and bestowing upon it the grand title of “The Famed City”. Who was the “Lady of Robin Hood’s Bay” who “Yorkshired” her lover, bravely? Was the “Liverpool Landlady” the origin of the commonly popular “Wild Rover”? And how come the Butcher and the Tailor found themselves transported to Sunderland after a night’s carousing on board a ship in the Bay?

Discover the answers to these and many other questions in this book.
